This route aims to inform all who love nature and our region about the trails that, since time immemorial, and for millennia, served to put people from different territories in contact.

For centuries, these pathways were the only infrastructure for communication between merchants and muleteers, becoming well-used routes that promoted those places they passed through along the way, stimulating commerce to flourish, thus giving rise to towns and villages.

Along its 100-kilometre trajectory, split into 8 stages, this route presents the traveller with a climatic gradient and a mosaic of landscapes that can be found in very few places in the Basque Country.

This pathway reaffirms the character of our land, and is open to all people so that they may gain knowledge of the history and maintenance of these routes throughout which, for centuries, there has been a continuous exchange of different cultures.

The GR-38 pathway begins in the Álava town of Oyón, and is divided into eight stages:

  • Stage 1: Oyón -Laguardia
  • Stage 2: Laguardia - Lagrán
  • Stage 3: Lagrán - Albaina
  • Stage 4: Albaina - Oquina
  • Stage 5: Oquina - Estibaliz
  • Stage 6: Estibaliz - Mendibil
  • Stage 7: Mendibil - Legutiano
  • Stage 8: Legutiano - Otxandio

The route is fully signposted with symbology that is characteristic of these trails, as shown in the picture below.
