Las pilas del Camino de Logroño
In 1996, because of some improvement work on the A-124 road an archaeological survey was carried out to investigate the existence of possible remains in the area.
The bibliographical information that pointed out the existence of some remains of a hermitage and a necropolis was discarded. This archaeological survey resulted in the finding of a Roman archaeological deposit.
This Roman deposit was called "Las Pilas del Camino de Logroño". The excavation, with an area covering over 450 m², took place between July and August, 1998. Here, the archaeologists found the remains of a pottery workshop, from Roman times, for the making of pottery objects for construction. It is a unique deposit so far in the Basque Autonomous Community.
In the deposit it is worth mentioning a kiln that has an entrance made of sun-dried bricks;¡ it is two metres long and one and a half metres high, leading to two rectangular vaulted rooms (fire chambers) The grate of the kiln is located over these rooms.
Some remains of ancillary constructions have been found in the surroundings of the kiln.
Besides, some physical evidence has been found, such as Roman roof tiles, sun-dried bricks, pottery floor tiles etcetera.
Due to the importance of the finding, it was decided to preserve the kiln, with the prospect of keeping it as a unique monument of the craftwork that was made two thousand years ago.
Some other remains of Roman settlements have been found in the area.
Within the town of Laguardia there are obvious remains of Roman occupation.
